Whilst adopting our new approach to Customer Service and maintaining transparency about our products and services we’ve decided to compile a list of some of the most common terminology used in the car hire industry and what they mean to you.
Additional Driver
When you rent a vehicle you are the only person allowed to drive the car/van, if you do wish to share the driving you can pay an additional charge to include an extra driver onto the rental. You will need to provide essential details about this driver, such as license information and contact details.
For some of our vehicle types this option is included within the price of the rental.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)
Loss Damage Waiver removes the driver’s responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of damage or theft. LDW is mandatory in Great Britain unless the customer is from the US or Canada and has insurance cover through their own credit card.
With a rental including loss damage waiver you only have to pay out an excess amount, determined by the vehicle class, in the event of the car being stolen or damaged. If you choose not to accept the LDW, which is an option for European rentals outside of the UK, then you will be held liable for the full price of the car.
Damage / Third Party Liability Insurance
Insurance coverage for the vehicle rented includes Third Party Liability with a maximum cover of 5,000,000 for damaged vehicle and unlimited liability for personal injuries. Insurance coverage is limited to Europe only.
Excess Mileage
For the majority of UK rentals Sixt offer unlimited mileage on the hire, but if the car is out on an extended rental of over 28 days then limits are placed on the amount of travelling the car can do in that period. Additional mileage beyond these limits will be subject to further charges.
Extended Loss Damage Waiver
For an additional daily cost on top of your rental you can take out the Extended Loss Damage Waiver (Base Excess Waiver) which helps to reduce the initial excess charge.
Flexi Tariff
Flexi Tariff allows you to hire a vehicle without paying anything in advance, payment will only be required upon collection of the vehicle. You can change or cancel your current reservation at any point prior to the rental and no cancellation fees apply.
Fuel Policy
The standard policy for Sixt’s UK rentals is a full to full policy, meaning that the car is full of fuel when you collect it from the branch and needs to be returned full. If the vehicle is returned without a full tank of fuel you will be charged for refuelling the car, at a rate higher than pump prices.
We also offer a pre-paid fuel option, at some locations, for one full tank of fuel and allows you to return the vehicle empty after your hire.
One Way Rental
Not everyone wants to return a hire car to the original pick up location, for these occasions we apply a one-way rental charge to cover any costs for returning the car back to it’s branch. One way rentals must be arranged at the time of your reservation and in certain cases your request may not be possible.
Out Of Hours Charge
Sixt branches tend to operate within standard business hours and if you want or need to return your hired vehicle outside of these hours then it can be catered for at some of our locations. However, there will be an additional charge for this.
Period of Hire
The Period of Hire relates to the length of your rental. From the moment you leave our branch to returning the vehicle for its final check.
Pre-paid Rental
By paying for your rental in advance you can benefit from a reduced hire price. However, once you have made the booking please be aware that due to the nature of pre-paid rentals cancellation and rebooking charges can be incurred.
Vehicle Type
Sixt is extremely proud of its fleet, by sourcing higher quality cars we are able to provide customers with a driving experience that is a bit more unique and individual than our rivals.
