Here are some rules and tips to make yourself aware of before you start your journey in Albania:
- You must be at least over 18 years of age to drive in Albania.
- In Albania, you have to drive on the right-hand side of the road.
- Everybody must wear seat belts whilst travelling in the car.
- Mobile phones can be used whilst driving with a hands-free set. Third-party insurance is required.
- Drink driving is prohibited and the legal blood alcohol level is 0.01 mg/ml. Please make sure that you are aware of all the road regulations before you start your trip in Albania.
Speed Limits
The standard legal limits, which may be varied by signs, for private vehicles without trailers are as follows:
- Residential areas – 50 km/h (31 mph)
- Outside residential areas – 90 km/h (56 mph)
- On motorways – 110 km/h (68 mph).
Things to Bring Along
It is compulsory to have the following equipment with you when driving in Albania:
- A Valid, full, UK driving licence
- An international driving permit
- Motor insurance documents
- Spare bulbs for your car’s external lights
- A fire extinguisher A first aid kit
- A warning triangle in case you break down
- A basic emergency repair kit will be useful because there are no recovery service in Albania. These should include jack, spare wheel, fan belts, wiper blades, local phrase book, water and overnight food.
- Always take a mobile phone with you in case of an emergency.
You might also want to bring a road map of Albania to accompany you as well as sat nav.
Additional Information
When driving in Albania always be extra careful as roads are not in very good condition and power cuts happen frequently. There is also the possibility of flash flooding throughout the year and there are only usually street lights in built-up areas and major roads. Because of this, it is recommended to use a 4×4 when driving in Albania.
If you are ever involved in a road accident you have to wait until the police arrive.
Some Albanian drivers can drive and behave aggressively and erratically so drive with caution and Don’t react to others behaviour.
There are no toll roads in Albania.

Border controls can be busy at weekends and during summer.
Petrol stations in Albania open from 8 am to 8 pm in the major cities.
