PUBLIC TRANSPORT
When planning a trip that allows you to get to know the island, you must take into account the ways to get around. Public transport can be an alternative, but you will need to adapt your itinerary to the various train and bus schedules.
If you choose a rental car, flexibility and independence are a guarantee. Sardinia offers well-structured roads in excellent condition for anyone who wants to get behind the wheel without too much stress.
By taking a rental car, you will also have the opportunity to move freely, visiting tourist sites, but also venturing into lesser-known areas.
If your idea is to explore the entire island we recommend you consider a trip of at least 14 days. If you have a week at your disposal, we suggest that you focus only on a part of it. Here are some suggestions for planning your holiday among the North, Centre and South of the island.
NORTHERN SARDINIA
If you have landed in Olbia, it is worth taking your car and taking a trip along the beautiful Costa Smeralda, whose name derives from the unique colour of its waters. Porto Cervo is the central ‘main’ area and is particularly appreciated by international high society. If you are visiting these areas, you should plan an excursion to the islands of the archipelago of La Maddalena. The protected island of Budelli, for example, is characterized by a peculiar pink beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia.
In the second largest city of Sardinia, Alghero, you can explore the fascinating historical centre and its ancient walls, still partly preserved. Not far from Alghero is the Grotta di Nettuno, easily visited thanks to daily boat connections.
CENTRAL SARDINIA
The archaeological site of Tharros is located on the Sinis peninsula. Nearby, in the lagoons around Cabras, you can admire the pink flamingos that live in this area.
A winding mountain road crosses the island until it reaches Orgosolo, where you can admire the beautiful murals that decorate the palaces. In Romanzesu, a city of ruins, there are the remains of sacred buildings from the Nuragic period. A few curvilinear steps on the east coast will take you to picturesque mountain villages such as Lanusei, where you can spend hours relaxing away from the most touristy places.
SOUTHERN SARDINIA
With its beautiful old town, Cagliari is definitely a charming city to visit during your holidays in Sardinia. A few kilometers from the center you can reach beautiful lagoons and sandy beaches. West of Cagliari, you can swim in the magnificent beaches of Costa Verde or visit Fluminimaggiore, its Roman temple of Antas and the caves of Su Mannu.
The unspoilt islands of Sant’Antioco and San Pietro, whose rocky coasts and sandy beaches are the perfect destinations for a relaxing excursion, are also well worth a visit.
