What should I do if I have an accident in my hire car?

If you are involved in an accident with or in your hire car, please follow these steps:
  • Do not admit or accept liability to any third party.
  • Collect details of all parties involved: names, addresses, and, where possible, witnesses, and notify us.
  • Secure the vehicle and inform the police immediately if anyone is injured, the road is blocked, or third-party property is damaged.
  • Report the accident: Call the breakdown assistance number in your rental agreement and notify our breakdown assistance team.
  • Time frame for accidents with third parties: Call the breakdown assistance service within 12 hours.

 

Vehicle confiscated or impounded?

Is reporting the damage mandatory?

 

Yes, reporting the damage to SIXT is mandatory, even for minor damages or single-vehicle accidents where no other vehicles are involved.

 
  • Names, addresses, and phone numbers of all parties involved
  • Licence plates and insurance details of other vehicles
  • Photos of the accident scene, damages, and surroundings

 

Do I need to report an accident even if I was the only one involved?

Yes. Single-vehicle accidents, such as hitting a post or kerb, must also be reported to SIXT immediately.

 

Can I have the vehicle repaired myself?

No. Repairs may only be carried out by authorised SIXT partner workshops. Attempting repairs yourself is not allowed and will result in the loss of insurance coverage.
