Accidents in your hire car

What should I do immediately after an accident?

If you have an accident with or in the Vehicle, you must:

  1. not admit or accept liability to any third party;
  2. obtain and notify us of all the names and address of all parties involved in the accident, including wherever possible any witnesses;
  3. secure the Vehicle, inform the police straight away in the event that anyone is injured, the road is blocked as a result of the accident or, if any third party property has been damaged;
  4. call the number for our breakdown assistance service as set out in your Rental Agreement and report the accident or breakdown to our breakdown assistance team; and
  5. (in the case of an accident with a third party), call the breakdown assistance service number within 12 hours of the accident.

In the event of confiscation or impounding of the Vehicle by third parties, you must inform us immediately by e-mail at damage-uk@sixt.com

Is reporting the damage mandatory?

Yes, reporting the damage to SIXT is mandatory, even for minor damages or self-inflicted accidents where no other vehicles are involved.

What information should I collect at the accident site?

  • Names, addresses, and phone numbers of all parties involved.
  • License plates and insurance details of other vehicles.
  • Photos of the accident scene, damages, and surroundings.

Do I need to report an accident even if I was the only one involved?

Yes. So-called single-vehicle accidents – such as a collision with a post or curb – must be reported immediately to SIXT.

Can I have the vehicle repaired myself?

No. Repairs may only be carried out by authorized SIXT partner workshops. Attempting repairs yourself is not allowed and will result in the loss of insurance coverage.
