Explore Bristol with your hire car

  • Make sure you take advantage of your hire car when in Bristol and drive out to Cheddar Gorge. This national nature reserve is breathtaking with its imposing cliffs, fascinating caves and museum of pre-history. It’s around a 19-mile drive from Bristol along the A38.
  • Bristol is known as a food lovers' destination. Once you have picked up your hire car take a drive to find the best spots to satisfy your appetite. The food experience ranges from family-friendly dining, down to earth Sunday lunches and Michelin starred fine dining.
  • If you want to experience the floating harbour in all its glory then park your hire car and hop on one of the many boats offering trips around the harbourside. Here you can experience themed cruises, tea trips up the Avon and experience the best of Bristol from the calm of the waters.

Winter in Bristol

A big attraction in the city is Bristol Cathedral, which was built over a 600-year period, the earliest parts dating all the way back to 1298. You can find it on the College Green. Don't miss a drive down to Llandoger Trow, where you can see the actual house where Daniel Dafoe spoke to the man on whose story he based Robinson Crusoe. Also worth a visit is the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.

Bristol driving information

  • If you are arriving at Bristol Airport, our branch is just a short shuttle ride away. From there it will take you around half an hour to drive into Bristol city centre on the A38.
  • Bristol is one of the more congested cities in the UK so it is best to avoid driving in the city centre if possible during peak times.
  • There is no congestion charge in Bristol but from 28th November 2022 a Clean Air Zone will be in operation covering large parts of the city centre. More in-depth information can be found on the Bristol City Council website.
  • There are plenty of roads in Bristol where you are able to park for free, however in the city centre you will mostly find pay and display parking. Of course, there are also plenty of multi storey car parks in the city centre.
  • If you want to get out of the city, there are plenty of places to visit within a short drive of Bristol. Bath is the nearest city to Bristol and can be reached in around 40 minutes on the A4. Stonehenge is just over 50 miles away and will take you about an hour and a half to drive there on the M4 and A360. If you stay on the M4 you can get to Oxford in around the same amount of time.
