- Watch out for cyclists: In cities, you’ll often find you're sharing the road with cyclists. Make sure you leave at least 1.5 metres between your hire car and bicycles when you are overtaking.
- Speed limits: Stick to the speed limits when driving in the United Kingdom. In cities, the speed limit is generally 30 mph, and 20 mph outside schools. In the countryside, the top limit is typically 60 mph (96 km/h), whereas on motorways, it’s 70 mph.
- Crossing borders: Car hire in the United Kingdom with SIXT allows you to drive across the border to countries within the UK, such as England, Wales and Scotland. To take your car on a ferry to mainland Europe or Northern Ireland, you must request written permission beforehand.

For free cancellation any time up to the day of booking simply choose the ‘pay later’ option while booking meaning less worry and more flexibility.

Although we can offer one-way car hire domestically it is not possible to cross any international borders, even if you are bringing the vehicle back to its original location.
In the UK you must always drive on the left-hand side of the road. Please pay attention to all speed signs and you stop at every stop sign and red/orange traffic light.
In the UK we ask all drivers are responsible for any toll fees, which can be paid at the respective toll. If you do not SIXT will charge 40 GBP for any such transaction, we must later cover.
