The small, ancient Viking town of Sandefjord became famous when the Gokstad Viking ship, over 1000 years old, was discovered there. You can visit a replica of this ship in the harbour and with your hire car drive out to the Gokstand Mound to see where the ship was found. The town also had a long tradition of whaling and the harbour's Whaling Museum explains the history of this dangerous trade. Also celebrating this old trade is the Whaling Monument. This sculpture of whalers in action is one of the town's symbols. The town sits at the head of a beautiful fjord which has beach areas, popular for swimming and sunbathing in the warmer months. If you prefer to visit in winter there are plenty of places to ice skate or ski a short drive from the town in your car rental.
