Driving Tips for Greece

Your trip in Greece begins as soon as you get behind the wheel. To ensure your experience goes to plan, follow this guidance:

  • Be aware of cyclists: Cycling is a popular sport in Greece, so respect cyclists when overtaking. You must slow down to overtake bicycles whilst also leaving ample room between yourself and the bike, normally at least 1.5 metres.
  • Speed limits: Stick to the speed limit when using car rental in Greece to make sure you are not fined. In general, this is 50 km/h (30 mph) in towns and 90-110 km/h (56-68 mph) in the countryside. On motorways and dual carriageways, it’s typically 130 km/h (80 mph).
  • Crossing borders: SIXT normally allows you to take your rental car over the border to neighbouring countries, such as Bulgaria or Albania. You must get written permission though and there is normally an additional cost for this.
  • One-way streets: Due to the history of Greece, many of the streets are narrow and impose one-way systems. Make sure you stay on the right track by remaining alert and using a navigation system.

Best places to visit in Greece

Rent a car in Greece and take in an array of top attractions:

  • Beach hopping: In the comfort of your car hire in Greece, take a trip down the coast and swim in the Ionian Sea. From Mikri Ammos Beach, near Syvota, you can drive to Agios Sostis Beach, near Parga, in about 40 minutes. These beaches boast crystal-clear waters and offer parking, so you can just pull up in your vehicle.
  • Athens: From museums to ancient architecture, there is an array of sights to see in Athens. Just remember to research the best parking spots ahead of your journey, to minimise the walking distance from the car park to the attractions.
  • Archaeological site of Mycenae: About a 1h 30min drive from Athens, you’ll find this 12th-century archaeological site, which boasts a stunning acropolis and palace.
