Car hire in Faroe Islands with SIXT

SIXT car hire in the Faroe Islands lets you truly explore this rugged tourist destination. Faroe is an archipelago in the far North Atlantic between Norway and Iceland, a great place for exploration. We offer vehicle models well suited to this, from some of the world’s most reliable brands, with MPVs and 4x4s on offer. For those who aren’t planning such an intrepid holiday, a comfortable saloon with climate control will make the ideal sightseeing vehicle in the towns and cities – Torshavn, Klaksvik and Fuglafjordur are the main ones here. No matter your choice, you’ll be driving a car that’s an average of only 3 months old.

Best places to visit in the Faroe Islands

  • Torshavn: With your hire car you can drive 1.8 miles to the island’s main city’s most renowned museum, Føroya Fornminissavn, the island’s historical museum containing Viking Age artefacts. There’s also The Nordic House and Tinganes, a historical walking area. Viðarlundin Park is the place to go for strolls in nature.
  • Klaksvik: The gem of this smaller town is Christianskirkjan, an ornamental little cathedral. There’s also the Leiikalund, the historic house remaining from the Royal Danish Trade industry in the 1800s. The oldest building in the town is now a convivial visitors’ and local culture centre. Viðarlundin uti i Grøv is a lovely rustic walk that you can take through the town and along its outskirts.
  • Fuglafjordur: Is the smallest of the three main towns in the Faroe Islands, most well-known for its contemporary cultural centre. Its main tourist attraction is the Viking longhouse ruins, over 56 feet long and with walls 4 feet thick. There’s also Hellur, a small enclave of traditional Faroese lifestyle, established in the 1840s, which you can drive a little way out of town to visit.

Winter 2024 in the Faroe Islands

If you hire a car in winter, the weather lends itself to sightseeing from your vehicle, rather than leaving it. Take a drive to Kirkjubour, and visit the oldest inhabited wooden house in the world. Then drive to the top of Sorfelli Mountain, from where you’ll have a panoramic vista of the island. You can also use your car to get to the sea inlet at Sund, one of the islands’ most dramatic coastal regions.
